Pit Bull Terrier Rescue Page

A litte pit bull knowledge:

In 1936, fanciers of the American pit bull (which was already a registered purebred with the ADBA and the UKC at that time) wanted the breed to be accepted by the American Kennel Club. The American Kennel Club (AKC) accepted the pit bull, but changed the name to "Staffordshire terrier" which they then later changed to "American  Staffordshire terrier" when they recognized the "Staffordshire bull terrier" in the 1970s. The American pit bull is the "working" type and the AKC registered "American Staffordshire" has developed into the "show" version of the pit bull.

Pit bull temperament

A dog's breed or type is not solely defined by its appearance; temperament must also be considered. The pit bull's proper temperament is usually described as one of confidence, determination, courage, and tolerance.

Pit bulls were historically bred for dog-aggression, not human-aggression. Before a fight, dog handlers washed each other's dogs. In the heat of a dog fight, handlers had to be very close to their dogs, sometimes with their face just inches from their dog's face. Dogs that redirected their aggression toward people were culled (killed), with very few exceptions. Overall, this should have created a breed-type with a very stable temperament.

This is reflected in the breed standards' descriptions of proper temperament. It is important to note that none of the breed standards allow for viciousness or human-aggression. http://www.happypitbull.com

American Pitbull Terriers have a place in our hearts. This page is dedicated to them; their care, and finding loving homes for them. We are proud to be one of a few rescue groups that is willing and able to save this often misunderstood breed. We have people dedicated to saving just this breed. We value them and our time. Despit the hipe often heard this breed is human friendly and loyal to the death to its family and those who love and care for them. THEY ARE GOOD DOGS!

According to the encyclopedia on the web the standards for the American Pit Bull Terrier are below. This is not necessary the case all of the time. With many people breeding for different qualities the American Pit Bull Terrier has evolved into many sizes, weights, and colors.

We do not suggest owning two of the same sex or liter mates. The best home for APBT is one with structure. These dogs are loyal and loving to humans but you should expect that they will have animal agression. For hundreds of years these dogs have breed to hunt and even fight. We do not except or place dogs to people who fight or that we suspect will fight the dog. They are great indoor pets. They can be sensative to hot and cold but are hardy dogs with short hair.
